Netgear Orbi back under our magnifying glass, this time with a slightly more "compact" version than the one previous, tried years ago. From an aesthetic point of view, taking a look at the official list of the company, it is clear the desire to always remain true to one's style. For this reason all the Orbi systems in circulation are practically indistinguishable from each other, although they often offer different characteristics. Without delay, let's see how the whole system behaved during the trial period, within ours Full review.
Netgear Orbi Review
As for the sales package, we always have the same type of initial equipment. Inside the box we find:
Orbi Router RBR20;
Orbi Satellite RBS20;
Ethernet cable of 2 length;
two 12V / 1.5A wall power supplies;
short instruction manual, in English.
Design & Materials
Almost two years ago we had the chance to try Netgear Orbi for the first time. Today, however, time seems to have stopped. Everything has remained unchanged on an aesthetic level and it is always very difficult to distinguish, in fact, the various products of this brand. In any case, routers and satellites are completely built in plastic, characterized by a matt finish that gives a Premium character. As for the overall dimensions, we are faced with two absolutely identical units, with dimensions equal to 142 x 61 x 176.6 mm. Also the weight does not differ, settling on 476 grams.
Taking a look at the back profile of the two products, it is possible to see the presence of different entrances. Starting right from the RBR20 router we find a single door Gigabit Ethernet 10 / 100 / 1000 Mbps and a port WAN. Of course, the dedicated device synchronization button, the router's on / off button, the hole for powering the unit and the mechanism for system reset are not missing.
On Satellite RBS20 we find the same router configuration, with only two differences: the upper part is not blue colored but is simply white and the WAN port has been replaced by a Gigabit Ethernet 10 / 100 / 1000 Mbps.
All the system in our possession is called Orbi AC2200 and now has good coverage, according to the company. I'm 250 square meters those covered by the two units and, for a product with a price well below the 300 euros, it is not bad at all. Some of you, however, will be wondering how it works and then the time has come to briefly explain to you what its strengths are. What we've got to try is one of the systems mesh better conceived in this panorama. Thanks to it, in fact, you will have the possibility to add new devices to your main network at any time, such as new satellites, so as to create a home environment characterized by a single Wi-Fi, guaranteeing maximum coverage in every point of the house. No one forbids you, in fact, to buy only the router initially, and then add the various satellites.
The peculiarity of this product is the Wi-Fi Tri-band, which allows you to take advantage of both bands from 2.4 e 5 GHz without the communications of the system detracting from these lines. In fact, routers and satellites exchange information and data on a third dedicated band, offering the user maximum power on the remaining two bands. Given its nature, Orbi can work in complete autonomy, autonomously managing the two bands on devices connected to Wi-Fi. So we won't have to worry about switching manually from 2.4 to 5 GHz, or vice versa, because it will be Orbi's job to maintain control over this management.
In the following we report, however, all the technical specifications:
IEEE® 802.11 b / g / n with 2,4 support GHz – 256QAM;
x2 IEEE® 802.11 a / n / ac with 5 support GHz – 256QAM.
MU-MIMO system for simultaneous data streaming;
Router & Satellite memory
256 GB of internal memory and 512 GB of RAM;
4 high performance antennas;
one Gigabit Ethernet port 10 / 100 / 1000 Mbps;
a WAN port;
power supply hole.
two Gigabit Ethernet ports 10 / 100 / 1000 Mbps;
power supply hole;
With regard to the configuration, I can only praise the company for the simplicity shown in this delicate phase. Personally, I installed Netgear Orbi using the relative application on smartphone, available for iOS e Android. Once logged in you will be guided in a series of operations that in about 10 minutes will lead to the correct operation of the product. Inside the package there is also a small brochure that explains this phase in a simple way.
Basically, once the router and satellite are connected to the power supply (not before having connected the router to your home modem, using the Ethernet cable in the package), simply access the Orbi app and start the configuration procedure. Everything will happen automatically and i LED present in the upper part of the two units will indicate the progress of the operations.
When Orbi comes into operation, it is possible through the application update the system, change the settings of all the satellites and the router, add new satellites, manage your own account, check the devices connected to the units present in the house, carry out speedtest, activate the parental Control and monitor the network traffic.
Orbi can also be configured using the app Circle from Disney, which offers parents of younger children the ability to more precisely control the Wi-Fi network available to their children.
Once again Netgear does not disappoint under this point of view. Although we were in the presence of a version less equipped than the one we tried a few years ago, we were nevertheless satisfied with his work in terms of performance. In fact, there are very few Ethernet ports on the back of the two devices, a sign that the product must pivot on the good connectivity guaranteed by the Wi-Fi network. And in fact, offering greater coverage, it manages to express itself at its best in every corner of the house.
It currently has a network Fastweb who, relying on fiber, offers me 1 Gigabit / s of power. Despite this, however, with the Fastgate (the modem offered by the company) I can never overcome the 40 Mbps in download by performing a speedtest on my Xiaomi Mi6. Everything changes when I use the network created by Orbi, given that in optimal conditions I reach 525 Mbps in download e 192 Mbps in upload. At the furthest point from the router and from the satellite, instead, I arrive up to 270 Mbps in download e 191 Mbps in upload. In the latter case, between my position and the router there are three walls to pass while with respect to the satellite there is only one central wall.
Obviously in these tests the smartphone I used was not the only source connected. At the same time two tablets, two smartphones and two PCs were connected to Orbi. In the evening hours I often added my own Nvidia Shield TV, with which I tried to play in streaming through the platform GeForceNow. During the game phases I did not encounter particular latency problems, managing to obtain practically the same reliability shown with the Ethernet cable connected to the product.
Netgear Orbi AC2200 is sold on various online stores, including Amazon. On this site the price is around 230 € in our configuration. It is certainly not an affordable price for everyone, considering its potential.
Those in possession of a large house, perhaps on several floors, are strongly encouraged to consider this opportunity in any case. The simplicity of installation and the power offered in everyday life make it one of the most complete products from this point of view. For this figure it is not possible to find better but you must be aware of the fact that the system allows few customizations and all the management of the bands cannot be changed manually.
