What I've always liked about smartphones LG it is definitely the use of a double camera that made the difference compared to its competitors. In fact, the Korean brand has always stood out for the wide-angle sensor accompanied by the standard one, which allows us to take photographs that we could otherwise achieve only with an action camera. This year, however, with LG G7 ThinQ the Asian company has decided to reduce the wide-angle range in order to increase the overall quality and details. Moreover, compared to previous models we find the integration of different innovations such as the notch, speaker Boombox and much more.
So how did he perform during our tests? Let's find out together in the full review.
LG G7 ThinQ Review
Inside the black cardboard box we find the following equipment:
- LG G7 ThinQ;
- wall power supply with 5V output = 1.8A / 9V = 1.8A;
- USB data transfer cable - USB Type-C;
- good quality earphones with additional small rubber pads;
- pin for the SIM slot;
- instruction manual.
I really enjoyed the choice of LG to include also some ear phones inside the sales package, as this is not at all obvious today, especially with regard to the top of the range. This also makes us understand that we continue to focus a lot on audio compartment.
Design and construction
From the point of view of the LG design has always made top of the line that they did discuss for theirs particular aesthetics but that, personally, I have always appreciated. This year the company has decided to focus on a more look simple e linear, in fact we say that there are no particular aspects that make us talk about him.
The smartphone is made in aluminum on the perimeter frame and in glass with protection Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the back cover, which give the smartphone a good strength, also certified by the military standard MIL-STD-810G. In addition, the smartphone has the IP68 certification which makes it resistant to water and dust.
We also have one in all this good handling thanks to a display in 19.5:9 which gives the device an elongated shape and the size of 153.2 x 71.9 x 7.9 millimeters for a weight of 162 grams.
On the right side there is only the power button, unlike the left one where we find the volume rocker and the quick key for the Google assistant. Below it is possible to see the mini-jack input, the USB Type-C input, the main microphone and the system speaker, while on the upper profile we find the microphone useful for reducing ambient noise and the SIM + microSD slot.
Finally we come to the back cover, which presents the dual camera with the LED flash and the fingerprint sensor, unlike the front part where, inside the notch, there is the camera for selfies, the ear capsule, the LED notification and the brightness and proximity sensor.
Even LG has decided to insert the notch instead of its typical second display although it must be said that the software has been well optimized to take advantage of the spaces adjacent to the notch.
As regards instead the fingerprint sensor questo č accurate e medium fast. We can say that the release is successful 9 times on 10.
This LG G7 ThinQ has a display IPS da 6.1 inches diagonal with resolution QHD + (3120 x 1440 pixels) and format 19.5:9, density of PPI 564, technology Super Bright Display which brings the maximum brightness up to 1000 nits, support toHDR10 and function Always-on.
In short, the panel of this smartphone is truly a pleasure for the eyes thanks to its vivid colors and aexcellent definition. Thanks to the new integrated technology, this unit turns out to be really very bright, so as to be able to shed light inside a completely dark room. Therefore, under direct sunlight we will not have any problems whatsoever.
I colors they are very faithfully represented but, if you want to customize them, you can do it through the settings by changing the calibration. Moreover, always in the display section we can go to hide the notch (a bar will be added), or change the color of the New Second Screen (ie the sides adjacent to the notch).
It will be possible to customize theAlways-on display, the screen resolution, the reading mode, the size of the icons on the display, managing the lower softkeys and much more. In short, once again the software LG proves to be decidedly complete e full of customizations.
However, apart from everything, i viewing angles I'm very good and it is a pleasure to use this smartphone for viewing film e video.
Hardware and Performance
Under the body we find the latest high-end chipset at home Qualcomm, Or the Snapdragon 845, which is inclusive of a CPU octa-core with a maximum clock frequency of 2.7 GHz, a GPU Adreno 630, 4 GB di LPDDR4x RAM, 64 GB di internal memory of type UFS 2.1 (about 48 GB are available) expandable through microSD to 2 TB and finally a processor IA integrated Hexagon 685 DSP dedicated to artificial intelligence on which LG tip a lot.
As far as this sector is concerned, we found no problems in the responsiveness and performance of the device. In fact, we have a daily use without compromise. THE 4 GB di RAM may seem few, but in reality they are sufficient for even more stringent use with many open apps.
La GPU behaves decisively good even with heavier titles like PUBG e Asphalt 9, which run fluids with maximum details.
The only problem I encountered concerns the device overheating. In fact, these days I allowed myself a short vacation, which translates into rather use stressful between camera, social, maps and use of data network. It must also be said that the hot these days it could be partly complicit, but unfortunately the smartphone tended to reach temperatures that forced me to remove it from my pocket due to the heat given off.
As I said earlier, with theLG G7 ThinQ, the company preferred reduce the wide angle to be able to guarantee a higher quality. In fact, at the rear we find a dual camera with a primary sensor from 16 mega-pixel (71 °), opening f / 1.6, optical stabilizer, laser autofocus + PDAF, and a secondary sensor from 16 mega-pixels with opening f / 1.9 and wide angle of 107 °.
In conditions of good brightness the photos are very good, characterized by a good level of detail, Of colors represented faithfully and a good white balance. In general, we have no particular criticism, even if the quality of the shots in any case does not place him among the best camera phones. In fact, we are not at the level of Huawei P20 pro, for example, but we still manage to get satisfactory shots.
Il wide-angle sensor allows us to take more special photos than almost all the smartphones in circulation and I found it very pleasant especially when traveling, where you can have fun trying to find the perfect shot. The quality is better than its predecessors, but it is possible to note some slight distortions and details not at the top.
We especially find this out of will be in which it is visible of the background noise with both sensors, although the colors are good and the white balance is managed fairly well.
The interface also integrates the AI mode which allows the recognition of the scene with the relative adaptation of the parameters for a better shot, but personally I did not find great improvements, in fact, in some cases the shot was even worse.
Also presentAutomatic HDR and portrait mode that manages to delimit the edges of the subject in the foreground quite well to perform a bokeh. Finally, we also find all the various shooting modes also present on other top of the range of the company such as LG V30.
Frontally, instead, we find a sensor from 8 mega-pixel (80 °) with virtual flash. In this case the photos have convinced me a lot in favorable light conditions, thanks to a good definition and a color range faithfully represented, although here the white balance limps a little. There will be the quality inevitably reduces and it is possible to note the digital noise. In this case the shots nevertheless reach sufficiency, but without being particularly surprising.
I video they can be registered up to the maximum resolution Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 pixel). The general quality is very good thanks to a good stabilization and nice colors. Besides the sufficiency also the autofocus, which turns out to be very reactive. Here we also find the possibility of using the manual mode and modify various parameters such as exposure time, ISO, white balance, color profiles, etc.
Come da tradizione LG, the audio is a sector strongly taken care of thanks to the presence of a Quad DAC to 32-bit Boombox mode, DTS: X 3D Surround and the support Apt-X HD for devices Bluetooth.
In short, all this translates into a level audio experience with well balanced frequencies and good power. This is amplified thanks also to the Boombox mode, which will take advantage of the internal space of the smartphone making it vibrate and using it as sounding board to amplify the bass.
Using headphones we can take advantage of the DTS: X 3D Surround Sound, who will return us a 3D effect, the classic cinematic sound.
Also good is the sound in ear capsule during calls, as well as the speakerphone and the microphone.
TheLG G7 ThinQ supports single SIM with connectivity LTE Cat.18, Wi-Fi Dual Band, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS / Galileo e FM radio. In short, this sector is also very complete and we have not encountered any problems regarding the reception, the switch between the data network and Wi-Fi or the connection of the signal with the satellite navigator.
On board theLG G7 ThinQ are Android 8.0 Oreo with personalized interface LG UX e security patches updated to 1 Maggio 2018.
By now we know this user interface well and we know how it is customizable starting from the display settings, the themes, the size of the icons, the text font and much more. In short, we have a complete software ed free of lag or various impulses, so this time too LG he did a great job.
This year there is also one news, because on the left side of the smartphone is the quick key for Google Assistant which, however, can only be activated when the smartphone is unlocked.
autonomy it is not one of the strengths of this LG G7 ThinQ, since the battery from 3000 mAh does not guarantee level performance. In fact, with intensive use it will be possible to barely get to 4 hours of active screen. We often wander around 3 hours and minutes 30 and we will be forced to recharge it before dinner.
However, the smartphone recharges rather quickly and support is also available wireless charging.
As you may have noticed, theLG G7 ThinQ is a smartphone devoted to multimedia thanks to an excellent display, a sound level and a good camera that thanks to the wide-angle sensor allows us to take very interesting shots for social media. On the opposite side, however, we find an autonomy that is not sufficient and a tendency to overheat which does not make it particularly pleasant to use during the summer.
To all this we must add that theLG G7 ThinQ is sold at list price a 849 €, an price too high evaluating the complex. However, fortunately it is possible to find it on Amazon and on other stores at around 550 €, a more affordable figure that could allow us to buy it without too much regret.
