In the mobile landscape Sony has decided to follow a different path than many other brands, choosing not to follow the common fashions in terms of design and continuing to produce smartphones mostly reserved for a specific niche. The Japanese company with its new Sony Xperia XZ2 has finally renewed several aspects compared to its predecessor, but has kept many others that did not lead to making the definitive leap in the present.
So how did this smartphone behave during our texts? Let's find out together in the full review!
Sony Xperia XZ2 Review
The sales package is made of gray cardboard and inside we find the following equipment:
- Sony Xperia XZ2;
- wall power supply with Quick Charge 3.0 and exit to 5V = 2.7A / 9V = 1.8A / 12V = 1.35A;
- USB data cable - USB Type-C;
- USB Type-C to mini-jack adapter;
- instruction manual.
Construction and design
Under this point of view Sony ha revolutionized quel iconic design which so characterized the devices of the Japanese house. So nothing more large eaves (luckily), nothing more side fingerprint sensor (unfortunately) and here also appears a display in 18: 9 (long last). In reality, although we no longer find the huge unused spaces, the frames at the ends are always present, but at least this time they appear to be finer and more pleasing to the eye.
As regards, instead, the displacement of the fingerprint reader on the back, we are not own. In fact, the latter is almost in the center of the body in a decidedly position uncomfortable to reach. During the first days of use, I always accidentally touched the rear camera (dirtying the lens), which is located at the point where the biometric reader is usually present.
In short, a bit of confusion has been made here, but I must say that after a few days of use you already get used to it.
Thanks to glass building (with protection Corning Gorilla Glass 5), however, the smartphone is elegance e good looking, although the material with which it is made tends to make it slip a little too much. On flat surfaces no problem, but on those also slightly inclined the Sony Xperia XZ2 will tend to slip slowly (eg sofa or bed).
In hand, however, it remains firm even if the weight is felt and the dimensions I'm generousin fact, due to its rounded shape, the smartphone has one thickness di 6 millimeters at the lowest point e 11.1 millimeters in the highest one. For the rest the device measures 153 x 72 millimeters for a weight of 198 grams, not a featherweight then.
On the right side we find the volume rocker, the Power button and the Shutter button, unlike the opposite part which is totally clean. Above is the SIM + microSD slot and the microphone useful for reducing ambient noise, while below are the USB Type-C input and the main microphone.
The front part houses the system speaker, the earpiece that also acts as an additional speaker, the front camera, the brightness and proximity sensor and the notification LED. Finally, the main camera is present at the back, flanked by the LED flash and the fingerprint sensor.
As mentioned above, the latter is in one uncomfortable position and almost flush with the body, but it works really well even if it's not the fastest ever. We can safely say that 10 times on 10 unlock your smartphone without problems.
Finally, let's not forget that the device has one IP65 / 68 certification which makes it resistant to water and dust.
Il Sony Xperia XZ2 has a display Triluminos IPS da 5.7 inches diagonal with resolution Full HD + (2160 x 1080 pixels) with support toHDR BT.2020 and to technology X-Reality, density of PPI 424, relationship 18:9 and protection Corning Gorilla Glass 5.
Thanks to the image processor X-Reality Engine will be performed upscaling standard content in a quality similar toHDR, while technology Triluminos will show the 30% of colors more than normal displays.
However, apart from all these details, the display is very good thanks to a more than sufficient brightness vivid colors and good viewing angles. Being of matrix IPS, the neri they are not very deep, but they can still be satisfying.
If you were not satisfied with the color calibration, you can always change it through the special menu in the settings. Furthermore, we also find the very comfortable Ambient Display, which will be activated once the smartphone is lifted (if it is obviously locked) and will allow us to see the notifications, time and battery status without completely reactivating the display.
Hardware and performance
Sub-fund absolutely to be promoted since the Sony Xperia XZ2 It's really very fluid e reactive thanks to the excellent chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, which includes a processor octa-core with a maximum clock frequency of 2.7 GHz, a GPU Adreno 630, 4 GB di RAM LPDDR4X e 64 GB di internal memory of type UFS expandable via microSD to 400 GB.
No problems encountered during daily use except a couple of forced closures di Google Chrome (on a week of use), but probably the smallest problem is attributable to software. For the rest, everything runs smoothly, even in oil Gaming more thorough and with heavier titles like Asphalt 8 o PUBG. In fact, the GPU behaves extremely well and the games run at maximum quality without frame drops.
Later this Sony owns a camera Motion Eye with sensor Exmor RS Sony IMX400 da 19 mega-pixels with opening f / 2.0, 5 electronic stabilizer axes SteadyShot, autofocus PDAF e laser e LED flash.
The feeling you get from the shots is that these are good, very good, but not at the levels of the real top of the range in this sector like the Huawei P20 Pro. In conditions of good brightness the photos are of quality thanks to a good definition and nice colors. The only flaw concerns the white balance which sometimes seems to burn the background slightly.
At night, however, we have satisfactory shots, but it is possible to notice the slight background noise and a more unstable lighting management. There digital stabilization di Sony can do miracles and, unless you have a shaky hand, the photos will not be moved.
On the front there is a sensor from 5 mega-pixels with opening f / 2.2 which, despite everything, allows us to take good pictures in daylight or partially illuminated situations.
I video they can be registered up to the maximum resolution 4K a 30 fps, which are very good, but with a stabilization that does not excel. Everything changes if you register in Full HD (both a 30 that 60 fps), where the videos are well stabilized and of very good quality.
However, the real news on which Sony has bet a lot is the possibility of recording HDR video always up to 4K. Furthermore, we always find the mode Super Slow-Motion a 960 fps, but this time we can also record in Full HD. The downside is that the slowed-down time frame is less than that captured in HD.
Theinterface it's the same compared to previous models and doesn't change much. Through the bokeh mode the smartphone will take two photos, one in the foreground and one in the background and combine them. Unfortunately, however, the results are not sufficient since the software cannot manage everything perfectly.
La HDR mode it is still inside the manual mode and each time to activate and deactivate it we will have to spend some time, not allowing us perhaps to make a click on the fly.
Il audio compartment the Sony Xperia XZ2 è excellent and this is due to the two speakers located on the front. As mentioned above, the first is located in the lower part, while the second is the ear capsule itself and, together, manage to guarantee us a power and a quality really level.
Le frequencies I'm well balanced and the bass are heard. Furthermore, there is also a new function, namely the Dynamic Vibration System, which thanks will allow us to fully immerse ourselves in the scene while playing movies, games or music. This is because the smartphone will start to vibrate on the basis of low frequencies, returning a particularly engaging sensation.
Not all the sector shines, because unfortunately Sony has decided to delete the mini-jack input in favor of the door USB Type-C. On the other hand, the sound in headphones is very good and we also have the support for technologies LDAC, AptX HD e AptX for listening through headphones Bluetooth.
No problems found in the call and with the microphone thanks to a clean sound.
Il Sony Xperia XZ2 supports single SIM with connectivity LTE Cat. 18, Wi-Fi a / b / g / n / ac Dual Band, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0 e GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS / GALILEO.
With regard to the reception, this seemed to me slightly below tone compared to other competitors. Sometimes I have found some little ones slowdowns especially in the engagement of the Wi-Fi after deactivating the offline mode.
For the rest, everything works perfectly, including satellite navigation.
Aboard Sony Xperia XZ2 are Android 8.0 Oreo with security patches updated to June 1 2018. The system is very similar to Android Stock, but we find different graphic customizations which will allow us to modify some aspects such as transitional animations, themes, the home grid and much more.
Despite this UI take care 14 GB, the system turns fluid and without slowdowns, the only problem I found only on a couple of occasions with the forced closure di Chrome.
For the rest we find, as always, some pre-installed applications and some applications dedicated to augmented reality. We can easily say that with regards to this aspect we find no differences with respect to the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact.
I must say that I was initially a little disappointed with the results I was getting with this Sony Xperia XZ2, but after a few days of break-in I had to change my mind. In fact, despite the "suns" 3180 mAh of battery, the autonomy turns out to be decidedly convincing.
using intensely the smartphone I got an average of 5 hours of active screen and, moreover, we find a series of energy saving mode (STAMINA and Ultra STAMINA) which will allow us to extend battery life.
We also find the systems Qnovo Adaptive Charging e Battery Care which will take care of preserving the longevity of the battery and adjusting the current levels during charging so as not to overload.
The supplied power supply guarantees a recharge in a short time, ie less than 2 hours. Instead, using other loaders, always with Quick Charge 3.0, the times are getting longer reaching even 3 hours.
Finally, the support to wireless charging.
In conclusion this Sony Xperia XZ2 it is a good product but it leaves us half satisfied, because if on the one hand we got to see many innovations, on the other hand some aspects are still in stall.
One of these is the camera that always mounts the same sensor as its predecessors and, despite the various software implementations to improve it, it does not prove to be up to absolute tops like Huawei P20 Pro (although the quality is still good). We have a audio and a display level, as well as a hardware very powerful, but some aesthetic choices leave a little to be desired, such as the convex shape of the shell that makes it decidedly slippery and the choice to insert the fingerprint sensor in that position unusual.
In short, the qualities are there and are obvious, but often Sony it is lost in other small aspects that would allow it to shine inside the band of super top of the range.
In all this, the Sony Xperia XZ2 is available on Official site in bundle con thewireless power supply with fast charge a 799 €, but on Amazon ed Ebay you can find it among the 530 and of 599 €, a decidedly more attractive price.
